The Class

A winner of the prestigious Palm D'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and opening the New York Film Festival in 2008, 'The Class' is a magnificent portrayal of the trials and tribulations teachers face in modern France. It is based on the autobiographical memoirs of a young schoolteacher, Francois Begaudeau who himself plays Francois Marin, the teacher and lead role in the film.

Cultures and attitudes often clash in the classroom, a microcosm of contemporary France. Despite the difficult teenagers, François insists on an atmosphere of respect and diligence. Neither stuffy nor severe, his extravagant frankness often takes the students by surprise. But his classroom ethics are put to the test when his students begin to challenge his methods...

Directed by Laurent Cantet; Starring, Francois Begaudeau and Nassim Amrabt.

“There is so much at stake in this wonderful, riveting work that ‘The Class’ is almost a genre in itself, a model of naturalism that outdoes fly-on-the wall documentaries.”
